The Philonomosian Society
A debate society fostering eloquence, rigorous argument, and civil discourse through weekly debates on business, public policy, ethics, law, and philosophy.
About the Society
First founded in 1839 and guided by the spirit of Lex, Libertas, Salusque Gentis (“Law, Liberty, and the People’s Wellbeing”), the Philonomosian Society advances the art of debate in service of truth and the common good. Weekly debates welcome all perspectives and are conducted in a spirit of intellectual hospitality.
- Weekly Debates: thoughtful, moderated debates concerning substantive resolutions.
- Oratory & Rhetoric: training in clear reasoning, persuasive speaking, and rebuttal.
- Cohort Community: a cohort system helps deepen understanding within and across rival traditions.
