Although many of the chapters in this volume have been published previously as journal articles and as introductions to primary source collections, their compilation here provides an important resource for scholars of colonial American history. Like one might expect of any collection of essays, this one faces some problems of structure and organization. The material is not arranged chronologically, as one might wish had Bangs produced a synthesized narrative of his understanding of the history of the Pilgrims, like his Strangers and Pilgrims, Travelers and Sojourners
