Faculty Workshop – Michael Veber (East Carolina University)
May 2 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
Michael Veber (Associate Professor of Philosophy at East Carolina University) will present his paper “The Paradox of Dogmatism as a Regulative Epistemic Problem.”
Paper Abstract: The paradox of dogmatism is an argument for the claim that you ought to ignore any evidence that runs counter to what you know. Regulative epistemology is the effort to develop principles to guide inquiry. The paradox of dogmatism is not typically understood as a regulative problem but, it is here argued, that is an illuminating way to view it. Understood that way, this paper offers a solution grounded in an epistemic policy of “following the argument where it leads.” The regulative policy on offer here is applied in several examples, including ethical inquiry.
This event will be held in the Hariri building, room 570. Visitors are welcome and catered lunch will be available. Please email the director of the institute, Michael Douma at if you plan to attend.
