Abstract: Recent developments in the ‘democratization’ of finance do not fulfill the equity ideals proponents of such developments espouse. I argue these developments actually hinder such ideals, by exposing both new entrants and financial markets themselves to harm. I address more narrowly a proposed means for making wealth creation more equitable – increasing the stock market participation of non-professional ‘retail’ traders through the use of online brokers. This so-called ‘democratization’, I argue, actually puts both individuals and markets themselves at risk of great harm.
